Demystifying Scientific Publishing from the Perspective of a Researcher Turned Editor
April 13, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm UTC-5

Papers are the core currency of scientific research; not only are they the primary medium researchers use to communicate their work, but the number of papers a researcher publishes and where they are published is often used as a proxy for a researcher’s worthiness of grants and promotion. Today, commercial publication is handled by five major companies ElSevier, SpringerNature, Wiley, Francis and Taylor and SAGE, some of which are home to some of the worlds most “prestigious” journals. Despite publishing being a centuries-old industry, it is still a mystery to many researchers how papers are selected for publication in these commercial journals. In this talk I will be shedding light on the internal workings of scientific publishing in general, but in particularly within Nature Publishing Group, with a focus on Nature Communications.
